Prima visione (ai piedi della grande torre).

  Seconda visione (all'interno del castello).

  Terza visione (una eco).

Quarta visione (...e all'improvviso un barbaglio).

I must have been around 8 or 9 years old when, for the first time, some of my school friends and I decided to go up to the castle. I remember the excitement was already strong during the journey. We talked about what we would find, and the imagination of us children back then knew no bounds. We reached the foot of the tower, and the feelings I had were fear, wonder, amazement, and disbelief. We scanned everything around us, searching for hypothetical, imaginary, and nonexistent treasures, and in the end we decided to play hide-and-seek. The place was perfect!

Over the years, I have returned "up to the Castle" several times, and always alone. Each time, the "old stone man" (as I like to call him now) was there, stirring "something" deep within me. So, through "The Four Visions for Piano Solo," I decided to tell you about that "something" and those emotions that, like déjà vu, appeared suddenly and fleetingly in my memory.

Preface by Maestro Giulio Marazia (composer and conductor)

There are musical experiences that have the extraordinary quality of having a dual significance. The first is artistic; the second is historical, involving a revival or revival of genres both well-known and unfamiliar. The artistic aspect and its appreciation are undoubtedly connected to the taste of listeners and the aesthetic trends of the times we live in. From this perspective, defining Oderigi Lusi's music is no simpler task than trying to provide genre definitions for what is happening in the world of sound today. One thing is certain: for many years, Lusi, through his distinctive talent as an excellent pianist, has continued a compositional tradition that has had, albeit with notable stylistic differences, composers such as Erik Satie, Sergei Prokofiev, and Dmitri Shostakovich as the greatest exponents of an original pianism. In the 4 Visions for piano solo "Presso il vecchio Castello di Avella," he retraces this tradition, just as he had addressed it in his previous work, dedicated to his homeland, Symphony No. 1 for soloists, choir, and large orchestra, "Abellana," another magnificent fresco filled with extramusical elements. In the small collection presented here, the composer introduces new elements of so-called "extra-cultured" musical writing. This emerges in the expert choice of rhythmic patterns and in the choice of phrasing and harmonies that straddle classical and jazz, folklore and pure music. There is also a quality that I would dare to call more objective, or, if you prefer, historical, namely, that of producing works conceived for piano to achieve the goal of renewing the repertoire for this instrument. Oderigi Lusi succeeds in using the keyboard and the technical and expressive capabilities of his instrument without a trace of rhetoric or mere pursuit of facile effect. Everything is necessary, everything is simply "essential" and splendidly musical. The musical ideas are measured by the obvious use of implicit connotations, by the expressive power of sounds, by the ability to excite, to refer, to pulsate, to allude, to convey meaning. All this is the intelligent consequence of a clear musical thought, rich in unusual harmonic solutions and set within a skillful rhapsodic structure. In short, I detect a sort of understanding, a closeness, a rapprochement, never vague impressions, but also a desire to experiment with a complicated series of operations dictated by immediate automatism, in search of particular and significant atmospheres. The traditional patterns of comparison are broken, and the discourse is enriched by a chorality born of care, attention, expertise, and rigor—all elements that Oderigi Lusi has successfully incorporated into these pieces, adding a new dimension to contemporary piano literature.
